TLDR Finasteride can cause serious side effects in some men, needing more research for treatment.
Post-finasteride syndrome (PFS) was identified as a serious condition with persistent adverse side effects, including sexual dysfunction, neurological issues, and mental health problems, in men using finasteride for pattern hair loss or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Despite reports of these persistent side effects, the medical community had not fully recognized PFS, and no effective treatments were available. Studies consistently showed an association between finasteride and sexual dysfunction, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, although many studies had limitations in assessing adverse events. The author concluded that finasteride and dutasteride could induce these adverse effects in men with certain epigenetic susceptibilities, highlighting the need for further research to understand and treat PFS.
