TLDR Check and treat low iron and vitamin D levels in people with hair loss.
The study compared nutrient and hormone serum levels between 54 patients with diffuse hair loss and 55 healthy controls, finding that patients with hair loss had significantly lower mean serum ferritin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Specifically, hair loss patients had mean serum ferritin levels of 14.72 ±10.70 ng/ml and mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels of 14.03 ±8.09 ng/ml, compared to 25.30 ±14.41 ng/ml and 17.01 ±8.59 ng/ml in healthy individuals, respectively. Additionally, 20.4% of patients had low serum ferritin levels, and 79.6% had low vitamin D levels. The study concluded that evaluating and supplementing serum ferritin and vitamin D levels should be a part of the treatment protocol for patients with diffuse hair loss.
