TLDR Exosomes may help treat hair loss by promoting hair growth and restoring hair follicles.
This study explores the potential of exosomes as a therapeutic alternative for androgenetic alopecia, a prevalent form of hair loss. Exosomes are nanometric extracellular vesicles secreted by various cell types, notably mesenchymal stem cells, and are involved in intercellular communication by transporting proteins, lipids, RNAs, and growth factors. Due to their regenerative properties and ability to modulate biological processes like cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and tissue repair, exosomes are being investigated for their ability to stimulate hair growth and restore compromised hair follicle activity. The study conducted a systematic review in May 2026, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and observational studies on exosomes in treating androgenetic alopecia. The findings suggest that exosomes hold promise as a strategy to address the progressive thinning and hair loss characteristic of this condition, which is linked to the dysregulation of follicular cycle maintenance mechanisms.
