TLDR Topical phenytoin may safely and effectively improve hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia.
This clinical investigation evaluated the efficacy and safety of a topical 5% phenytoin solution in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in men over a 16-week period. The study involved adult male participants who applied the solution twice daily. Results showed statistically significant improvements in total hair count, hair density, and follicular units from baseline to week 16. Although the average hair unit and anagen rate increased, these changes were not statistically significant. Participants reported improvements in scalp oiliness and hair texture. The treatment was well tolerated, with only mild and transient adverse events, suggesting that topical phenytoin could be a safe and effective option for AGA.
