TLDR Early diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis in hedgehogs are crucial for recovery and public health.
This study examines 31 cases of dermatophytosis in northern white-breasted hedgehogs (Erinaceus roumanicus) in Romania, highlighting the zoonotic potential and health challenges faced by hedgehogs in urban environments. The affected hedgehogs, admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center between 2020 and 2024, showed symptoms such as alopecia, scaling, and hyperkeratosis, with 55% in poor body condition and 39% experiencing dehydration or systemic issues. Diagnosis involved microscopic examination, and treatment with itraconazole led to a 77.4% recovery rate. The study underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for successful rehabilitation and highlights the need for awareness of the disease's impact on both animal welfare and public health.
