This study investigated the genetic factors contributing to prostate cancer (CaP) susceptibility in South African males, focusing on the androgen receptor gene (AR) and the cytochrome p450c17a gene (CYP17), both involved in androgen metabolism. Researchers analyzed 20 prostate cancer and 25 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) tissue samples, along with blood samples, to identify genetic variants. They discovered 4 novel mutations in the AR gene and 3 novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CYP17 gene. These genetic variations could serve as markers for determining an individual's risk of developing prostate cancer, potentially explaining ethnic differences in cancer incidence and progression.
