Gestational Thyroid Dysfunction in a Sub-District Area of Pampore, Kashmir: A Cross-Sectional Study

    The study conducted in Pampore, Kashmir, involving 200 pregnant women, found a high prevalence of gestational thyroid dysfunction, with 90% experiencing hypothyroidism and 10% hyperthyroidism. Notably, 75% of these cases were newly diagnosed during pregnancy. Common symptoms included fatigue, hair loss, and mood swings. Despite 70% of participants using levothyroxine therapy and consuming iodised salt, there was a low intake of iodine-rich seafood and other essential micronutrients. Only 35% made dietary changes post-diagnosis. The findings underscore the importance of early screening, integrated nutrition counselling, and comprehensive antenatal care to improve outcomes for mothers and their babies.
