Management of Gout: Targeting Pain or Metabolic Control

    G. R. Subbu, Martin M, Milaniya M, Raveendran A
TLDR Gout should be managed by lowering uric acid levels, not just treating pain.
The article emphasizes that gout is primarily a metabolic disease with widespread systemic effects, necessitating early intervention and a treat-to-target approach to urate-lowering therapy. This strategy aims to reduce serum uric acid levels below 6 mg/dL to prevent disease progression and related health issues, rather than just managing acute symptoms like pain. The rising prevalence of hyperuricemia-related diseases is linked to lifestyle changes, and addressing gout's metabolic origins can mitigate its impact on various bodily systems. Early identification and treatment of hyperuricemia are crucial, as gout is both preventable and curable with proper management.
