TLDR Alopecia areata causes significant emotional and social challenges, especially with more hair loss.
The study assessed the psychosocial impact and disease burden of alopecia areata (AA) among 337 Australian adolescents and adults. It found that both groups experienced significant physical, emotional, and psychosocial impacts, with disease burden increasing with more extensive hair loss. Adolescents and adults reported varying degrees of hair loss, with 43% of adolescents and 52% of adults experiencing large to complete hair loss. Emotional symptoms and activity limitations were more pronounced in those with greater hair loss. Depression and anxiety scores were elevated, particularly in adolescents, and activity impairment was reported by 70.5% of adults and 57.1% of adolescents.
