Common Hair Changes After Bariatric Surgery: A Review
TLDR Bariatric surgery often causes temporary hair loss due to stress and nutrient deficiencies.
Bariatric surgery, including procedures like duodenal switch, gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and sleeve gastrectomy, often results in temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium, due to surgical stress, rapid weight loss, and nutritional deficiencies in iron, zinc, vitamin D, and biotin. Over 50% of patients experience this hair loss, impacting mental health and quality of life. Nutritional supplements are recommended to address these deficiencies and reduce hair loss.
