TLDR Hair loss is common after bariatric surgery, especially vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and is linked to emotional distress.
This systematic review examined the relationship between obesity, metabolic syndrome, and bariatric surgery in the context of hair loss, analyzing seven studies with 9,940 participants. The review found that hair loss is a common issue following bariatric surgery, particularly vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and can lead to significant emotional distress. The studies indicated that while iron and zinc levels are typically normal post-surgery, the combined levels of these minerals can predict hair loss. Additionally, changes in serum amino acid profiles, specifically leucine concentration, were noted as influential factors in post-operative alopecia. The review highlighted the need for further research to better understand these relationships and address the emotional impact of hair loss in affected individuals.
