TLDR Hair follicle stem cells can help treat hair loss and chronic ulcers, but more research is needed for other uses.
This review highlights the regenerative potential of multipotent hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs), primarily located in the follicular bulge, due to their ability to differentiate into multiple lineages. HFSC-based therapies have shown success in treating androgenetic alopecia and chronic ulcers, while applications in neuroregeneration and vascular engineering are still in preclinical and in vitro stages. The article discusses recent advances in follicular compartmentalization and the discovery of actively dividing subpopulations, as well as the technical limitations and evidentiary gaps that need to be addressed for these therapies to transition into clinical practice.
