TLDR Targeting hair follicle stem cell and lymphatic vessel signaling may help treat hair loss and improve wound healing.
This systematic review explores the interactions between hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) and dermal lymphatic vessels, highlighting their role in hair growth and tissue regeneration. The review includes 10 studies, primarily in murine models, with one human scalp study. It finds that HFSCs and lymphatic vessels engage in dynamic cross-signaling, crucial for the hair cycle. Lymphatic vessels dilate and change gene expression during HFSC activation, while HFSCs secrete factors to maintain lymphatic function. Lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) promote HFSC growth through growth signals. Enhanced lymphangiogenesis supports prolonged hair growth, whereas disruption leads to hair follicle regression. The study suggests that targeting HFSC-lymphatic signaling could offer new therapeutic avenues for wound healing and hair loss treatment.
