TLDR PCOS is common among young Saudi medical students, with symptoms like hair loss, acne, and weight gain.
This study found a high self-reported prevalence of physician-diagnosed polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) at 18.5% among 303 female medical students at King Saud University, which is higher than rates reported in Western populations of similar age. Common symptoms included hair loss (60.7%), acne (49.8%), and weight gain (32%). Significant associations with PCOS diagnosis were found with factors such as age, BMI, menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, weight gain, diabetes mellitus, and family history. Hirsutism was notably associated with PCOS (OR = 4.36, p = 0.005). The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing genetic and lifestyle factors and recommends early screening and targeted health education.
