Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) Among Patients With Primary Cicatricial Alopecia (PCA): A Systematic Review

Rashmi Singh, Doris Wilborn, Dimitra‐Aikaterini Lintzeri, Ulrike Blume‐Peytavi
TLDR Primary cicatricial alopecia significantly reduces life quality, mainly due to pain and anxiety.
This systematic review examines the health-related quality of life (hrQoL) in adults with primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA), analyzing 14 studies with 572 patients. The review found that over 70% of patients experience impaired life quality, with trichodynia and anxiety negatively impacting hrQoL, while factors like disease duration, education, employment, and marital status showed no effect. The studies often lacked justification for sample size and had potential non-response bias. The review suggests integrating psychosocial interventions with PCA treatments and calls for further research using more consistent and comprehensive tools to address the mental health needs of this patient population.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Prostaglandin balance affects hair loss, particularly in conditions like Lichen Planopilaris, where an imbalance can lead to hair follicle damage. Treatments mentioned include prostaglandin analogs and Pioglitazone HCL, with a focus on maintaining prostaglandin equilibrium for potential hair regrowth.

community Losing Hair on Dutasteride? You might have LPP

      in Research/Science  97 upvotes 1 year ago
Men with hair loss might have lichen planopilaris (LPP), which can mimic androgenetic alopecia, leading to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment with finasteride or dutasteride. Proper diagnosis, including biopsies, is crucial to distinguish between androgenetic alopecia and conditions like LPP.

community Can we get a reality check on PP405?

      in Research/Science  80 upvotes 5 months ago
PP405 is a promising hair loss treatment that may outperform minoxidil and finasteride by reviving dormant follicles and promoting significant regrowth. Results from ongoing trials are awaited, with a potential market release between 2028-2030.
