TLDR The hydrogel effectively treats oral mucositis by reducing oxidative damage and bacterial infection.
The study presents a multifunctional hydrogel, QTMP-Gel, designed to treat oral mucositis (OM) by addressing oxidative damage and bacterial infection. The hydrogel, made from quaternary ammonium chitosan and tannic acid, adheres well to wet oral mucosa and releases drugs in response to reactive oxygen species (ROS). It contains platinum nanoparticles for ROS scavenging and minocycline hydrochloride for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In vitro tests showed excellent biocompatibility and effectiveness against E. coli and S. aureus. In a hamster model, QTMP-Gel accelerated wound healing, reduced proinflammatory cytokines, and cleared excess ROS, offering a promising approach for OM treatment.
