TLDR Low oxygen conditions improve the healing ability of older stem cells from fat tissue.
Hypoxic preconditioning significantly enhances the regenerative potential of aged adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). In a study involving 24 donors (12 young and 12 aged), aged ADMSCs subjected to hypoxic conditions (3% O2) showed improved growth kinetics, reduced senescence, and enhanced differentiation and migration capabilities compared to those cultured under normoxic conditions. Gene expression analysis revealed upregulation of regenerative and survival-related genes and downregulation of pro-apoptotic and senescence-associated genes. This approach holds promise for improving the efficacy of autologous regenerative therapies in aesthetic dermatology.
