TLDR Improving education, training, and access to affordable treatments is crucial for better managing inflammatory skin diseases in Latin America.
The review addresses the challenges and opportunities in treating inflammatory skin diseases like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and alopecia areata in Latin America, highlighting significant disparities in healthcare access due to economic, regulatory, and infrastructural barriers. It emphasizes the need for improved public education, clinician training, and coordinated care to enhance patient outcomes. Despite the efficacy of biologics and targeted therapies, access is limited, with economic barriers and fragmented health systems exacerbating inequities. The MEASURE-AD study in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina reveals a high disease burden in atopic dermatitis, while the National Registry of Alopecia Areata in Colombia provides robust data involving 562 patients. The review calls for expanded multicenter registries and regionally adapted treatment pathways, noting the potential of biosimilars to reduce costs and improve access. Ethnic diversity may influence disease expression and outcomes, underscoring the need for more inclusive research.
