By linking the K19 promoter to a lacZ reporter gene, researchers observed specific expression patterns in pancreatic ductal epithelial cells, surface colonocytes, small intestinal villi, and gastric isthmus cells. The expression of the transgene correlated with the presence of K19 and the transcription factor KLF4, suggesting a potential role in epithelial cell biology and differentiation programs. This indicated that the K19 promoter could be a valuable tool for studying epithelial cell biology and transdifferentiation, especially in the pancreas and stomach.
