Long COVID Syndrome: An Unfolding Enigma

Surendra Kumar Sharma, Alladi Mohan, Vishwanath Upadhyay
TLDR Long COVID can cause long-lasting symptoms, but vaccination and early treatment can help prevent it.
Long COVID syndrome, a significant global health issue, affects patients after recovery from COVID-19, with symptoms persisting beyond three months regardless of initial illness severity. Risk factors include older age, female gender, multiple co-morbidities, severe initial disease, and viral reactivations. Symptoms can affect any system and include fatigue, cognitive impairment, cough, dyspnea, anosmia, hair loss, and diarrhea. Diagnosis lacks specific tests, but emerging biomarkers like reduced complement C7 complexes and a two-gene biomarker may aid in identification. Vaccination and early antiviral treatment can help prevent long COVID. Ongoing clinical trials aim to find effective treatments, while physical and mental rehabilitation is crucial for patient recovery.
