Regional Differences in the Distribution of Melanocyte-Containing Hair Bulbs in the Skin of Male Albino Rats

This study investigated the presence and distribution of melanocytes in the hair matrix of male albino rats, despite their lack of melanin production. Using RT-qPCR analysis, researchers identified mRNA expressions of melanocyte markers (dopachrome tautomerase and tyrosinase) in the skin of albino rats, with variations in expression levels across different skin areas. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of melanocytes in the hair matrix, particularly in the head, dorsal thorax, and dorsal midline regions, similar to hooded rats. The findings highlight the importance of considering regional differences in melanocyte presence when analyzing gene expression in albino rat skin.
