TLDR Microneedles could make it easier and less painful to deliver more types of drugs through the skin.
The document reviewed the potential of microneedles (MI) in enhancing transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) by increasing drug permeation through the skin. TTS offered benefits like improved patient compliance, elimination of first-pass effect, and stable blood drug levels, but were limited by the physicochemical properties of drugs. MI, with their painless application, could expand the range of drugs suitable for transdermal delivery, including small molecules and larger entities like vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. The review detailed various MI types, their production technologies, and current clinical trials, highlighting their potential to transform drug administration routes.
