TLDR The new minoxidil formulation could better promote hair growth for treating androgenic alopecia.
This study aimed to enhance the therapeutic effect of minoxidil (MXD) for treating androgenic alopecia (AGA) by developing a novel formulation using cyclodextrin (CD) inclusion complexes within transfersomes. The researchers used molecular docking to identify sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) as the most suitable CD for forming a stable inclusion complex with MXD. The optimized formulation, MXD/SCD@TFs, showed improved drug loading (DL) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) compared to traditional methods. The new formulation demonstrated significant potential in promoting hair growth in AGA model mice, suggesting it could be a better candidate for MXD treatment of AGA.

A 23-year-old woman is considering starting minoxidil for hair thinning but is concerned about its long-term use and effectiveness. Recommendations include consulting a doctor, checking ferritin levels, and considering treatments like spironolactone or finasteride, while minoxidil is suggested for regrowth but not as a primary treatment.

Minoxidil alone is not effective for hair regrowth; adding a DHT blocker like finasteride or dutasteride is recommended. Dermastamping and micro-needling can enhance results, and some users suggest trying oral minoxidil or natural DHT blockers.
