Mycophenolate Mofetil in Induction and Maintenance Therapy for Juvenile Onset Severe Lupus Nephritis

The study evaluated the efficacy of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in treating juvenile onset severe lupus nephritis. Twelve children (mean age 12.6 years) underwent induction therapy with MMF and prednisolone for 6 months, followed by 18 months of maintenance therapy. Significant improvements were observed in urine protein levels, serum anti-double-stranded DNA antibody, renal function, and serum C3 and C4 levels during induction therapy (p < 0.05). No renal flares occurred during maintenance therapy, and the mean prednisolone dose was reduced to 9.2 mg/day. Major infections were reported in 5 patients, including Herpes zoster and bacteremia, and 3 patients experienced hair loss. The study concluded that MMF was effective for both induction and maintenance therapy in these patients.
