TLDR Plant-based dyes are a safe, effective, and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic dyes.
This study investigates the use of natural plant extracts as hair dye colorants, highlighting their eco-friendly and antioxidant benefits. Using LC-MS/MS analysis, the research identified tannic acids as most concentrated in Juglans regia L. extract, while protocatechuic acid was notably abundant in Allium cepa L. extract at 220.14 mg/g DW. Onion peel exhibited the highest phenolic content (684.5 µg GAE/mg) and DPPH scavenging activity (78-93% inhibition). The addition of oxalic acid improved color intensity and wash fastness. The study concludes that plant-based dyes offer a safe, effective, and sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes, providing vibrant colors and supporting hair health and environmental sustainability.
