TLDR Plant-based dyes are a safe, effective, and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic dyes.
This study investigates the use of plant extracts as natural hair dye colorants, highlighting their eco-friendly benefits and antioxidant properties. The analysis identified tannic acids, quinic acid, protocatecchuic acid, and quercetin in various extracts, with protocatecchuic acid being most abundant in Allium cepa L. extract. Onion peel exhibited the highest phenolic content and DPPH scavenging activity. Oxalic acid was used to enhance color intensity and wash fastness, with improved results confirmed by CIEL ab values. The study concludes that plant-based dyes offer a safe, effective, and sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes, providing vibrant colors while promoting hair health and environmental sustainability. The research was funded by the Republic of Turkey Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organisation (KOSGEB).
