TLDR Neutrophil extracellular traps slow down hair follicle healing after injury.
The study "Neutrophil extracellular traps impair regeneration" conducted by Asada, Wang, Alphonse, Li, Hintelmann, Youn, Pielstick, Ortines, Miller, Archer, and Garza in 2020, investigated the role of neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in wound induced hair follicle regeneration (WIHN). The researchers found that while mature neutrophils were present shortly after wounding and remained within the wound after the barrier was reestablished, their presence and the production of NETs actually hindered WIHN. This was contrary to their initial hypothesis that mature neutrophils and NETs might promote WIHN. This conclusion was supported by the observation that genetic models of neutrophil depletion showed enhanced WIHN, and Pad4 null mice that are defective in NET production also showed improved WIHN.
