TLDR Niosomal methylene blue gel effectively improves moderate to severe acne.
The study aimed to evaluate the use of methylene blue in a niosomal hydrogel form for photodynamic treatment of acne. Researchers formulated and characterized methylene blue niosomes, examining factors like drug amount, cholesterol: span 60 ratios, and stabilizers. The niosomes were successfully produced using the reversed phase evaporation technique, with 1000 µg of methylene blue being optimal for niosomal preparation. The release of methylene blue followed a Higuchi diffusion mechanism, and its incorporation into a 3% HPMC gel resulted in a feasible release rate. Clinical evaluation of the niosomal gel showed a significant improvement in acne inflammation compared to IPL treatment.
