New Perspectives on Nutraceutical Insulin Sensitizing Agents in the Treatment of Psoriasis and Other Dermatological Diseases

Pietro Morrone, Francesca Caroppo, Alberto De Pedrini, Alessandro Colletti, Germano Baj
This narrative review explores the role of nutraceutical insulin-sensitizing agents (ISAs) like myo-inositol, alpha-lipoic acid, vitamin D, vitamin C, and folic acid in treating insulin resistance (IR)-related dermatological diseases such as psoriasis, acne, and hidradenitis suppurativa. Evidence from randomized controlled trials and observational studies indicates that ISAs can improve glycemic control, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory pathways. Myo-inositol, particularly when combined with magnesium and folic acid, has shown significant benefits in reducing acne severity and improving quality of life in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. While promising results have been observed in psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa, more robust long-term studies are needed to confirm these findings and establish effective treatment protocols.
