TLDR Oral minoxidil reduced hair shedding in women with chronic telogen effluvium.
The study retrospectively examined the use of low-dose oral minoxidil in 36 women with chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) at Sinclair Dermatology in Melbourne, Australia. The mean age of participants was 46.9 years, and they were administered doses ranging from 0.25 to 2.5 mg, with most receiving 1 mg. Results showed significant improvement in hair shedding scores (HSS) from a mean baseline of 5.64 to 3.9 at 6 months and 3.05 at 12 months. The study found no significant changes in blood pressure, though some patients experienced mild side effects like facial hypertrichosis and transient dizziness. Overall, oral minoxidil was effective in reducing hair shedding in CTE patients, with improvements noted in most participants by the 12-month mark.
