TLDR Lipid peroxidation worsens skin diseases but may help treat cancer.
Lipid peroxidation (LPO) involves the oxidative degradation of lipids, leading to harmful products like malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), which contribute to the pathogenesis of skin diseases such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and alopecia by promoting inflammation and oxidative stress. While the role of LPO in other skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and melanoma is less clear, elevated LPO biomarkers correlate with disease severity. LPO may also be beneficial in treating neoplastic diseases, as enhancing LPO could support therapies like photodynamic therapy for melanoma by increasing cytotoxicity against cancer cells.
