Phyllanthus emblica L., or amla, is a fruit rich in phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, organic acids, and vitamin C, with numerous health benefits. It is known to improve heart, gastrointestinal, neurologic, and sexual functions, and amla oil can promote hair growth and maintain hair color. Recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown amla's positive effects on systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonerosive reflux disease, and chronic periodontitis. Topically, amla has antiaging and skin-lightening properties. Preclinical studies indicate protective effects on cardiac, gastrointestinal, and kidney tissues, and animal studies suggest cognitive enhancements. While generally safe, caution is advised for individuals with bleeding disorders or those taking anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and antidiabetic drugs.
