A Pilot Study to Evaluate Effectiveness of Botulinum Toxin in Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia in Males

In a pilot study conducted in 2017, botulinum toxin was found to be a safe and effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia in males. The study involved 10 male patients with androgenetic alopecia, who were injected with 5 U of botulinum toxin at 30 sites in the scalp. The efficacy of the treatment was assessed through photographic assessment and self-assessment scoring by the patients after 24 weeks. The results showed that 8 out of 10 patients had a good to excellent response based on photographic assessment, while 7 out of 10 patients reported a good to excellent response based on self-assessment. However, the study concluded that further research with a larger sample size and randomized controlled trials are needed to establish the role of botulinum toxin in the management of androgenetic alopecia.
