TLDR PRP may help short-term with ankle arthritis pain, but long-term effects are unclear.
This systematic review analyzed five studies with 184 adult subjects to evaluate the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in managing ankle osteoarthritis (OA). The studies, including one randomized controlled trial, showed significant improvements in pain and function, especially in early-stage OA patients, although these effects were not long-lasting. Secondary outcomes like quality of life and patient satisfaction also improved, with minor adverse effects such as pain and swelling resolving within 72 hours. Despite variability in PRP preparation and administration, the treatment was generally well-tolerated, suggesting PRP as a promising option for ankle OA. However, further research is needed to standardize protocols and confirm long-term benefits.
