Prevalence of Female Pattern Hair Loss in a Multiracial Population

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) in a multiracial population using clinical and trichoscopic criteria. The study recruited 350 women from the general population, aged between 20 and 75 years, through quota sampling for age and the main racial groups from Brazil. The overall clinical prevalence of FPHL was 32.3%, and according to dermoscopic criteria, it was 36.9%. The prevalence of FPHL increased with age, and there was no difference in its prevalence between White and Brown-Black individuals. The study suggests that larger studies evaluating different populations are essential to understanding the role of genetic ancestry in FPHL pathogenesis.
