TLDR Injecting Platelet-Rich Plasma reduces leakage risk in colorectal surgery.
A randomized controlled trial involving 60 patients with a mean age of 60.28 years undergoing open low anterior resection for rectal tumors demonstrated that injecting Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) into the colorectal anastomosis line significantly reduced the incidence of anastomotic leakage. In the study, leakage occurred in 4 patients (13.3%) in the control group, which received normal saline, while no leakage was observed in the PRP group. The findings suggest that PRP injections effectively decrease the risk of anastomotic leakage from 13.3% to 0%, enhancing surgical outcomes for patients undergoing this procedure.
