TLDR Oral dexamethasone may help regrow hair in adults with alopecia totalis and universalis.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of pulse corticosteroid therapy with oral dexamethasone (PCT-OD) for treating adult alopecia totalis (AT) and universalis (AU). Involving 31 patients, the study found an 80.6% therapeutic response rate, with 71% achieving complete regrowth. All patients with AT had a complete response, and adverse effects were observed in 32% of participants, including weight gain and Cushing syndrome. The study concluded that PCT-OD at 0.1 mg/kg/day biweekly was a potential therapeutic option for AT/AU, although the absence of a control group was a limitation.
