TLDR Raman spectroscopy can detect radiation exposure in mouse hair with high accuracy for up to 7 days.
This study explores the use of Raman spectroscopy to assess changes in melanin from the hair of C57BL/6 mice exposed to gamma radiation, ranging from 0 to 4 Gy. The research identifies melanin-specific Raman features as potential biomarkers for radiation exposure, with a 785-nm excitation wavelength showing greater sensitivity. The study achieved 88% sensitivity and 83% specificity in distinguishing irradiated from nonirradiated mice, with 100% accuracy up to 7 days post-exposure. However, accuracy declined after 7 days due to changes in melanin spectra. The method allows for precise dose estimation with <1 Gy precision and holds promise for noninvasive radiation biodosimetry and medical monitoring.
