TLDR Alopecia may lower the risk of substance use disorder.
This study investigated the relationship between substance use disorder (SUD) and alopecia using data from the All of Us database, involving 9,385 patients with alopecia. It found that 8.4% of these patients had SUD, and alopecia was identified as a potential protective factor against SUD, with a decreased odds ratio of 0.73. The prevalence of SUD did not differ between scarring and non-scarring alopecia. The findings suggest that fear of exacerbating hair loss or increased mental health and community support might contribute to lower SUD rates in alopecia patients. The study recommends that dermatologists and primary care providers continue to promote psychotherapy and community support for patients with alopecia experiencing negative psychosocial impacts.
