TLDR A new method effectively detects trace sex hormones in cosmetics, ensuring safety.
The study developed a reliable method using UHPLC-MS/MS with magnetic solid-phase extraction and isotope-labeled internal standards to detect trace sex hormones in cosmetics, addressing safety concerns. The method was validated with recoveries between 71.7-116.2% and RSDs from 1.6% to 8.3%. Analysis of 116 cosmetic batches revealed trace progestins and estrogens in 10 samples. The method proved convenient, efficient, and environmentally friendly, scoring 0.66 on the AGREE metric. A preliminary safety evaluation assessed potential health risks of residual progesterone in hair loss prevention cosmetics by calculating the margin of safety.

Dutasteride is less commonly prescribed for hair loss because it is not FDA-approved for this purpose, unlike finasteride, which is more accessible and preferred due to fewer side effects. Dutasteride may be more effective in reducing DHT but has a longer half-life and potentially more significant side effects.
