TLDR JAK inhibitors are effective and generally safe for treating alopecia areata, but monitoring for side effects is important.
This meta-analysis evaluated the safety and efficacy of systemic JAK inhibitors for treating alopecia areata, following the approval of Baricitinib as a breakthrough therapy. The analysis included 26 studies and highlighted various adverse effects associated with different JAK inhibitors, such as upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, acne, headaches, and laboratory anomalies like hypercholesterolemia. Despite these side effects, JAK inhibitors demonstrate significant therapeutic potential and are considered a safe treatment option for alopecia areata, with a relatively low risk of severe adverse events. Careful patient monitoring and individualized treatment plans are recommended.
