TLDR Rituximab improved her dermatomyositis better than usual treatments.
This case report explores the use of rituximab, a B-cell-depleting therapy, in a 43-year-old woman with refractory dermatomyositis (DM) complicated by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Despite conventional treatments, including corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, the patient experienced persistent disease activity. Rituximab was introduced, resulting in sustained reductions in creatine kinase levels and stabilization of muscle strength, suggesting its potential effectiveness in managing complex autoimmune overlap syndromes. However, the study's retrospective nature and concurrent use of other therapies limit the ability to attribute improvements solely to rituximab. The findings underscore the need for prospective studies to better understand rituximab's role in DM treatment, particularly in overlap syndromes.
