Salivary Inflammatory Markers And Free Androgen Index In Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Case-Control Study

    TLDR Salivary cytokines and the Free Androgen Index are promising non-invasive markers for diagnosing PCOS.
    This study investigated hormonal, metabolic, and inflammatory profiles in 100 women (50 with PCOS and 50 controls) and found that women with PCOS exhibited significantly higher levels of biomarkers, including salivary cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β. The study highlighted the potential of salivary IL-1β and TNF-α as non-invasive markers for PCOS, showing strong discriminative performance with AUC values of 0.98 and 0.97, respectively. The Free Androgen Index (FAI) also demonstrated a high discriminative ability (AUC=0.97) and was strongly associated with PCOS. These findings suggest that salivary cytokines could complement traditional androgen-based measures, though larger studies are needed to confirm these results.
