TLDR The scalp is a safe and effective donor site for skin grafts in children with burns.
The systematic review analyzed the use of the scalp as a donor site for split-thickness skin grafts in pediatric burn patients, involving 417 children aged 2.9 to 7.3 years, with follow-ups up to 27 years. The findings indicate that the scalp is a safe and effective donor site, with epithelialization occurring in 7 to 25 days. Early complications included folliculitis and delayed healing, while late sequelae involved alopecia and hypertrophic scarring, though scar quality was rated good in over 80% of cases. The study concludes with a proposed management algorithm to enhance safety and standardize care in pediatric burn treatment.
