TLDR Women with hair loss have higher free testosterone levels.
This study aimed to investigate the serum levels of various hormones and proteins in women with hair loss compared to those without. It involved 71 women with hair loss and 70 without, aged 15-50, from skin and hair care clinics. Hormone levels, including T4, TSH, prolactin, and proteins like SHBG and Alb, were measured. The results showed no significant differences in most hormone levels between the two groups, except for free testosterone, which was significantly higher in women with hair loss (P=0.000). The study concluded that since androgens play a crucial role in hair cycle regulation, measuring free testosterone levels could be important for women with androgenic alopecia.
