TLDR Alopecia areata patients have higher IFN-γ and low vitamin D3 levels.
This study investigated the role of serum IFN-γ, complement components C3 and C4, and vitamin D3 levels in the prognosis of alopecia areata (AA) by comparing 20 AA patients with 20 healthy controls. Results showed significantly elevated IFN-γ levels in AA patients (299±115.7 Pg/ml) compared to controls (73±10.84 Pg/ml), with a p-value of 0.00, indicating a strong association. While C3 and C4 levels in AA patients were within the normal range, vitamin D3 levels were found to be severely deficient (6.86±4.03). The study also noted a higher prevalence of AA among males, particularly in the 1-19 age group.
