TLDR Women with PCOS have higher irisin levels, which may affect their metabolism and hormones.
This study analyzed serum irisin levels and body composition in 33 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and 32 healthy controls. Women with PCOS had significantly higher serum irisin levels (10.82 ng/mL) compared to controls (2.57 ng/mL), which correlated with markers of hyperandrogenism, such as increased total cholesterol, LDL, and visceral fat. The study suggests irisin may contribute to the metabolic and hormonal dysregulation in PCOS. Additionally, women with PCOS had higher body fat and lower lean mass percentages. The findings indicate irisin's potential role in PCOS-related metabolic disturbances, though the small sample size and lack of BMI matching limit the study's generalizability.
