TLDR Herpes zoster can cause lasting nail and hair damage.
This letter to the editor discusses two cases of cutaneous appendage damage following herpes zoster (HZ) infection. The first case involves a 59-year-old male who experienced nail damage on his left hand after HZ, which improved after shoulder surgery and antiviral treatment. The second case describes a 54-year-old woman who suffered hair loss in the occipital region following HZ, with no significant hair regrowth observed after 3 years despite treatment. The letter suggests that severe inflammatory reactions from HZ may lead to such damage, and highlights tuberculosis infection and kidney transplantation as potential risk factors. The author calls for further exploration of the mechanisms behind cutaneous appendage damage post-HZ.
