TLDR The berberine gel effectively reduces hair loss and promotes faster hair regrowth.
The study developed and optimized a smartlipid nanocarrier gel formulation of berberine for treating testosterone-induced androgenetic alopecia. The gel, characterized by a particle size of 111.30 nm and an encapsulation efficiency of 82.43%, demonstrated suitable physical properties and an 80.65% drug release over 24 hours. In vivo testing showed that the berberine-loaded gel significantly reduced hair loss, promoted earlier hair growth initiation, and shortened the regrowth duration compared to standard treatments. These results suggest that the enhanced bioavailability and sustained release of berberine make it a promising therapy for androgenetic alopecia.
