TLDR Different solvents change minoxidil crystal shapes and improve flowability.
The study explores the effects of different alcoholic solvents on the morphology of spherical crystals of minoxidil, a drug used to treat androgenetic alopecia. It highlights the formation of various spherical crystal aggregates, including the novel spherulite aggregates (SLA) produced in a n-butanol–ethyl acetate mixture. The addition of ethyl acetate alters the morphology and promotes agglomeration of spherulites. The research also examines the flowability and powder properties of SLA, noting a 15.8% reduction in the repose angle and a 24.7% decrease in the Hausner ratio. Additionally, a unique butterfly-shaped crystal of minoxidil is reported, which forms spontaneously in a homogeneous solution.
